Over the years CBC has forged excellent relationships with members of the House of Lords, who regularly host the influential annual CBC Symposium. These high-calibre debates consider key issues affecting Christians in the world and the UK that are relevant to broadcasters. The 2010 CBC Symposium provoked the commissioning of a prime-time BBC1 documentary. These lively and intelligent debates offer an opportunity to question the panel and invite a media response.

2012 -

'Islamist Resurgence: Shari'a and freedom' Baroness Cox, CBC's Vice President chaired our meeting on Monday 19 March, 2012, and spoke on matters arising out of her Private Members Bill on Gender Equality and Shari'a. Down the years CBC has striven to bring to a wider constituency important issues for discussion and scrutiny which feature in our discourse as a nation. Such issues were the subject of our Symposium.

BARONESS COX is a towering champion for justice in this land and worldwide. She is a compassionate apologist and practitioner of humanitarian aid to countries where many people live and die in appalling circumstances from tyrannical and threatening political regimes.

BISHOP MICHAEL NAZIR-ALI who was born, grew up and studied in Pakistan before coming to this country, is a man of great erudition with particular expertise in Islamic law. He is the former Bishop of Rochester and as an academic lecturer and writer, is a contributor to a book on 'Sharia in the West', amongst his distinguished output.

CANON ANDREW WHITE, Vicar of St George's Church, Baghdad (on video link). In the midst of the chaos of Baghdad, Canon Andrew's dedication to the pursuit of peace has earned him massive international recognition., not least in bringing understanding between Shia and Sunni peoples.

As a nation whose history has inexorably been shaped by our Christian faith, we value highly the foundational bedrock of our nation, that under God we might be godly and quietly governed, free to worship God, enjoying freedom of speech, of assembly, of religion and of worship, having recourse to just laws and legal systems where even the right of a fair trial is based upon the Christian understanding that a man is innocent until proven guilty.

'If the Son shall set you free, you shall be free indeed.'
